Intersurgical Reservoir Bags Do Not Contain Natural Rubber Latex

All Intersurgical reservoir bags have been made from a synthetic latex since 2003.

Further to the recent MHRA Alert (MDA/2014/016) regarding reservoir bags - all Intersurgical reservoir bags have been made from a synthetic latex since 2003 and therefore do not contain natural rubber latex.  In fact, no Intersurgical products contain natural rubber latex!

Natural rubber latex is known to cause Type I and Type IV
allergic reactions, as well as irritant contact dermatitis. Proteins in natural latex can cause Type I reactions which typically develop within minutes after direct contact with latex. Mild reactions includes hives, swelling and asthma-like symptoms and although rare, severe reactions resulting in anaphylaxis can occur. The type IV reaction, also known as allergic contact dermatitis, usually occurs upon re-exposure and can develop days after (48-72 hours). Symptoms are usually confined to the area of contact and results in itchy, blistering, rashes forming. Irritant contact dermatitis is the most common clinical reaction to latex products. Reactions usually occur on the hands after continual use of latex gloves and results in dry, itchy lesions on the skin.

Protect with Silver Knight™

Watch our new Silver Knight™ anti-microbial breathing systems video.
In the continued fight against Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI's) our range of Silver Knight™ products with anti-microbial additive are available for both anaesthesia and intensive care use.

Constant handling of breathing systems by theatre personnel can increase the risk of pathogens being spread from patient to patient, and patient to staff. By reducing the number of pathogens on the breathing system, transmission between infected patients can be minimised and the proliferation of pathogens reduced.

Until now, Silver Knight has been tested with the five bacteria listed below, but now Escherichia Coli  has been added to that list.
  •          Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus
  •          Staphylococcus epidermis
  •          Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  •          Klebsiella pnuemoniae
  •          Acinetobacter calcoaceticus

Our new Silver Knight™ video indicates this, and highlights just how effective Silver Knight is against the six bacteria listed.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV)

Infection prevention and control measures are critical to prevent the possible spread of MERS-CoV in health care facilities.
To date 701 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV including at least 249 reported deaths have been reported globally  to the World Health Organisation (WHO).  Although as the name suggests this has mainly centred upon the Middle East Region , there have reports from around the world.  The upcoming festivals and prilgimages will vastly increase the movement of people into and out of the region which could further exacerbate the spread of the infection.

WHO's most recent recommendation is:
"Infection prevention and control measures are critical to prevent the possible spread of MERS-CoV in health care facilities. It is not always possible to identify patients with MERS-CoV early because like other respiratory infections, the early symptoms of MERS-CoV are non-specific. Therefore, health-care workers should always apply standard precautions consistently with all patients, regardless of their diagnosis. Droplet precautions should be added to the standard precautions when providing care to patients with symptoms of acute respiratory infection; contact precautions and eye protection should be added when caring for probable or confirmed cases of MERS-CoV infection; airborne precautions should be applied when performing aerosol generating procedures.(1)"

The Intersurgical breathing filter range and FiltaMask™ medium concentration mask and can assist in the reduction of cross contamination between patients, staff and equipment.
