Safety by design

The Intersurgical range of breathing systems and filters have been designed with a primary focus upon improving patient safety and minimising risk.

All Intersurgical breathing filters and breathing systems have a tethered and brightly coloured luer port cap to avoid any risk of occlusion or harm to the patient. Additionally, breathing systems are supplied with a red safety cap at the patient connection of the breathing system to reduce the possibility of loose plastic objects entering the breathing system when not in use.

Our range of filters and breathing systems are compliant with recent guidance to ensure all breathing system components have either ports with tethered caps or no port.mad

A recent National Patient Safety Alert (NaPSA) has identified that some breathing system components with untethered caps are still available to purchase.

The alert found that loose items unintentionally introduced into the airway during intubation, ventilation or advanced airway management can lead to partial or complete airway blockage. In a recent six year period, five incidents were identified where a foreign body was aspirated, and a further four incidents where the foreign body was identified during intubation and then removed.

Please see our website for more information about our range of breathing systems and breathing filters.

Reduce the pressure

View our products that could help reduce pressure sores

We are proud to support the European Pressure Ulcer Panel (EPUAP) by raising awareness of pressure ulcers.

A pressure ulcer is a localised injury to the skin and/or underlying tissue usually over a bony prominence, as a result of pressure, or pressure in combination with shear. A number of contributing or confounding factors are also associated with pressure ulcers; the significance of these factors is yet to be elucidated1.

Intersurgical provides two products that can help reduce the occurrence of pressure ulcers on the ear: the Intersurgical EcoLite™ face mask range and nasal cannula with ear guards.

The Intersurgical EcoLite™ adult oxygen range features an extra chin section incorporating two integral seals ensuring that the mask fits a wide range of face shapes. The mask's retaining elastic can be fitted either above or below the patient's ear depending on the patient's face shape. In the preferred below ear position it eliminates the discomfort and longer-term trauma created by elastic sitting on top of the patient's ears.

Our nasal cannula with ear guards is designed to prevent trauma to the patient's ears thanks to the soft silicone foam cushions, which are easily adjusted and securely fitted.

New anaesthetic breathing system now available

This breathing system range is supplied with a gas monitoring line conveniently and safely positioned inside the length of the tube securely anchored at the Y-piece, to ensure optimal positioning for accurate and reliable gas monitoring.

With the monitoring line secure, it eliminates the need for additional luer ports in either the Y-Piece or breathing filter/Heat and Moisture Exchanging filter (HMEF) device and therefore avoids any possibility of accidental misconnections or disconnection in use. The monitoring line is kept clear of the working environment, providing a tidy and less cluttered anaesthetic space, reducing the risk of occlusion or disconnection.

Available in two lengths and two different configurations, this breathing system combines two products into one, complete and ready to use.

New i-gel® Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine bibliography published

Featuring all known evidence on the use of i-gel® supraglottic airway device in a resuscitation and pre-hospital setting, the new edition includes even more adult, paediatric and manikin studies, case reports and a section on cardiocerebral resuscitation and passive oxygenation.

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, i-gel remains an important option for managing the airway in the emergency and pre-hospital setting, so the opportunity to review the published evidence for the device at this time is particularly valuable.

You can now download the PDF from the i-gel website and through the Education page.

Clinical evidence on the i-gel is also available to view on our evidence database, which includes all studies mentioned in both this bibliography and the standard version.

We hope you find the bibliography and clinical database useful in reviewing evidence published on the i-gel device.

Silver Knight™ anti-microbial breathing systems

Silver Knight™ anti-microbial breathing systems provide an additional weapon in the fight against potential cross contamination in the operating room.
Silver Knight contains an anti-microbial additive that uses silver-ions to disrupt the normal enzymatic activities of bacteria. It functions as a safe, quick and effective catalyst to deactivate pathogenic bacteria and prevent their proliferation.

For COVID-19 patients, the disposal of breathing systems on a single-use basis has been recommended for all known diagnosed cases.  As elective surgery restarts despite the known risk posed by the COVID-19 this may not always be practical or affordable across the entire patient population undergoing surgical procedures. The adoption of Silver Knight, along with appropriate breathing filters, provides a further opportunity to improve care and patient protection and reduce the risk of cross infection for routine general anaesthesia.

To find out more about how Silver Knight can help reduce the risk of cross infection, visit our website product page, view the video or review the supporting information sheet.

Breathing systems and infection control

As elective surgeries slowly resume in some countries following their COVID-19 peak there are continuing infection control challenges.
Breathing systems and all the disposable medical devices used to deliver general anaesthesia play an important role in the reduction of cross-contamination when used appropriately, and in accordance with the local, national or international guidelines.

Intersurgical offers a range of high-quality single-use breathing systems, available in different lengths, configurations and tube types for your clinical requirements.

Intersurgical's FiltaMask™ oxygen mask

FiltaMask™ is an adult medium concentration oxygen mask, combining oxygen delivery with a filter media covering the exhalation ports, and is intended for use on adult patients with respiratory infections who may be a source of aerosolised infectious pathogens and who also require supplementary oxygen.
Features and benefits include:
  • Incurved face seal providing improved level of fit and comfort
  • On-chin positioning providing a better fit to a wider range of face shapes
  • Low elastic position eliminating trauma to the patient's ears
  • Integral filter media reducing the risk of escaping aerosols

Further information on the FiltaMask mask can be found on the product page, and supporting information sheet and oxygen therapy training video. It is also part of the Infection Control range of options which may be used to help reduce the risk of cross contamination between patients and health care workers in the clinical environment.

i-view™ video laryngoscope, tracheal intubation and COVID-19

Throughout the pandemic there has been much discussion regarding the best way to manage the airway of patients with COVID-19. In a new blog post, our Airway Group Product Manager, David Chapman, investigates the use of the i-view™ video laryngoscope in videolaryngoscopy for tracheal intubation in the context of Coronavirus.

The article looks at the latest guidelines regarding airway management, the potential benefits of single use devices in the context of infection control and what advantages videolaryngoscopy may have to offer over direct laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation.

Access to the article can be found on the blog itself, plus through the 'Interact with us' section of the i-gel® supraglottic airway website.

The i-view™ video laryngoscope is a single use, fully disposable video laryngoscope, providing the option of video laryngoscopy wherever you might need to intubate.

New i-view™ video laryngoscope instructional video

A short instructional video is now available for the i-view video laryngoscope. The video provides a useful guide and overview of the i-view and an introduction to the basic steps for correct use.
With many COVID-19 protocols recommending the use of video laryngoscopy for patients who require intubation, the  i-view provides the option of a single use, fully disposable video laryngoscope with a standard Macintosh blade, making it ideal for use where there is a concern regarding infection control.

The video is available on the dedicated i-view page, product pages and Education video page.
